The Andrew Balding-trained seven-year-old could not get in a blow at winner African Story or runner-up Mukhadram, but he stayed on and was just three-quarters of a length behind third horse Cat O'Mountain. Ridden by Jamie Spencer in the colours of Pearl Bloodstock, Side Glance collected a little more than £300,000 in prize money.

Spencer, whose mount finished just ahead of another famous traveller, the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Cadeaux, said of Side Glance: "He always ups his game on this surface and he's run a blinder. We were drawn towards the outside of the field, and realistically we were happy to get place money, which he's done."

Also on the world's richest race card, Pearl Bloodstock's Dunaden tackled the $5m Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, in which he finished ninth. The Richard Hughes-ridden Mars was pulled up after two furlongs in this race, and Spencer said: "When Richard's horse ran out I was lucky to miss him. I couldn't be happier with my run through the race. It's a nice start to the season for him and I'm looking forward to other races."

Spencer, who rode a double on the night when partnering Certerach (trained by Michael Halford) and Toast Of New York (Jamie Osborne) in Group Two races, did not enjoy such a pleasing run on the David Simcock-trained Trade Storm in the $5m Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free. He said: "I was in the right position, considering the pace, but my horse didn't perform. I was disappointed. At the 600 metres I put him under pressure and he wasn't going anywhere so I just looked after the horse."
