Classic hopes and ace sprinters in action

During a week in which Qatar Bloodstock stallion Makfi was responsible for four more winners in Britain - including a pair of juveniles who scored yesterday - hopes are high for more success when Hot Streak, Pearl Secret and Wind Fire tackle Haydock's big sprint (15.45). In a memorable one-two for Qatar Racing in last year's race (pictured), Hot Streak finished first and Pearl Secret was second.

Oisin Murphy, who rode the winner, is back in the saddle today, while George Baker will partner Pearl Secret for the first time and Paul Hanagan rides Wind Fire.

All three horses have run once this year, with Hot Streak having finished third at Longchamp recently in the Gr.3 Prix de Saint-Georges, in which Pearl Secret was eighth. Qatar Racing manager David Redvers told the Racing Post: "Hot Streak needed the run in France, which will have put him spot-on. In my opinion he'll take all the beating. We know he likes the track and he won the race last year."

Ireland's big race of the weekend, the Gr.1 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, has attracted a field of 11, including Gleneagles, who won the British version at Newmarket earlier this month and is likely to start a very short-priced favourite.

Endless Drama, who runs in the colours of Sheikhs Khalifa and Suhaim and Qatar Racing, won his only start as two-year-old and has finished runner-up twice this season - on the latest occasion he chased home Tombelaine, who lines up against him today.

Trainer Ger Lyons says of the colt, who is ridden by Andrea Atzeni: "He's in great form and just keeps improving all the time."

Lyons runs Cappella Sansevero in Monday's German 2,000 Guineas, the Gr.2 Mehl Mulhens Rennen (15.45) at Cologne, in which Pearl Bloodstock's Karpino is also a candidate. Ten horses are set to line up, with Colin Keane riding Lyons' runner, and Oisin Murphy taking the reins on Karpino, who is trained by Andreas Wohler.
