Champion jockey Richard Hughes will be the focal point, for he has announced he will hang up his saddle after the final race to devote more time to starting his training career. Of the seven thoroughbred races, Hughes rides in six, including the final-day highlights, the Group One Qatar Nassau Stakes, and the highly-competitive Qatar Stewards' Cup (15.45), which is set to be contested by 28 sprinters.

Among them are a pair of horses that will represent Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing, namely Gamesome, who is owned in partnership with Essafinaat, and Suzi's Connoisseur - they will be ridden by Joe Fanning and Andrea Atzeni respectively.

When the draw for the race was made on Thursday, trainer Olly Stevens plumped for stall 11 for Gamesome, while Stuart Williams opted to take stall nine.

Stevens, who trains at Robins Farm Racing near Chiddingfold in Surrey, just a short journey from Goodwood, said: "Gamesome is a horse we have always thought a lot of. He won his maiden so well that the mark he got that day has probably made life difficult for him. He has run consistently without quite winning and you need the luck in these sprints. The Qatar Stewards' Cup is always a hugely competitive race and this year will be no different.

"He has been bumped leaving the stalls on a few occasions, which has set him alight, and being drawn in stall 11 means he effectively has an empty stall next to him as they made in blocks of ten."

At Doncaster today Qatar Racing's talented sprinter Hot Streak competes in a conditions race (4.05). Trainer Kevin Ryan has booked Oisin Murphy to take the ride, and Hot Streak faces just four rivals, but has to concede weight all round.
