Spear and Sail make mark in the ring

Flaming Spear (Lot 343) was sold for 125,000gns, while Wet Sail(pictured, Lot 395) made 100,000gns, and both horses were bought by their trainers for different owners. Bloodstock agent Stephen Hillen did the bidding for Flaming Spear on behalf of a client of Kevin Ryan's, while Charlie Fellowes ensured Wet Sail returned to his stable by bidding in person while taking instructions by telephone from a new owner to his Newmarket yard.

Classy handicappers Halation (Lot 344) and Gamesome (Lot 392) both drew plenty of interest before selling for 70,000gns and 75,000gns respectively. Ted Voute bought the first-named, while trainer Paul Midgeley took Gamesome.

God Willing (Lot 393) was another who made a mark when bought by trainer Declan Carroll for 57,000gns, but there were plenty of other Qatar Racing horses at many levels and to suit most pockets.

The four-day sale begins at 9.30am each day and already this morning New Hope (Lot 441) has made 26,000gns to Mohammed R Al-Kuwaria, one of the many buyers from the Middle East in Newmarket this week, while Indian Monsoon (Lot 505) has joined Irish trainer Charles Byrnes at a price of 31,000gns.

Later today the three-year-olds Master Of Irony (Lot 652), a dual winning son of Makfi, and the Galileo colt Murgan (Lot 585), who recently secured an overdue first victory when easily winning his maiden, should prove popular with buyers. Among other Qatar Racing horses on their way to the ring today are Doncaster Cup winner Pallasator (Lot 745), and the Ger Lyons-trained pair of Sacrificial (Lot 771), Fog Of War (Lot 725).

The Qatar Racing horses are being offered by Jamie Railton, with the exception of Pallasator who is part of the annual Heath House Stables draft organised by trainer Sir Mark Prescott.
