Atzeni at Salisbury for trio of rides

The trio are headed by La Rioja, who bids to win the card's feature race, the Gr.3 CGA Dick Poole Stakes (3.45).

Trained by Henry Candy for Qatar Racing, La Rioja ran a fine race to finish second of ten on debut at Lingfield in June, and followed up with a five-length victory at Newbury the following month.

Both races were on good-to-firm ground, and today's going will be easier - this morning it is given as 'soft, good to soft in places' - while the opposition includes several useful horses. Richard Fahey has sent recent York winner Mayfair Lady on the long trip south from Yorkshire, while Richard Hannon saddles Bahaarah and Whatdoiwanthatfor, who are also last-time-out scorers.

It looks a tough assignment for La Rioja, but with £24,000 to the winner and a chance of valuable black type, she takes her chance and has been pleasing Candy in her recent work.

Also in action at the Wiltshire track is Bell Heather, who runs in the opening Whitsbury Manor Stud EBF Stallions Novice Stakes (1.40).

Six horses go to post, and all won their latest start, although Bell Heather, who is trained by Charlie Hills, receives weight from her rivals. She won over seven and a half furlongs on heavy ground at Lingfield on her debut, when spread-eagling a field and putting four lengths between herself and the runner-up, so should stay today's mile trip.

White Poppy, trained by Andrew Balding, makes her racing debut in the Virginia Walwyn Memorial EBF Quidhampton Maiden (2.40) over a trip just in excess of six furlongs. On breeding she might need every yard of the trip and further, and is a big filly who seems sure to benefit from today's experience.
