Gesture's bid for Pretty Polly glory

Qatar Racing and Newsells Park Stud's marvellous mare won the Gr.2 Middleton Stakes at York last month and heads to Ireland in good form, but she faces a wealth of talent among the nine-strong field. On paper her key rivals are this year's QIPCO 1,000 Guineas winner Legatissimo and Irish 1,000 Guineas victress Pleascach, plus the unbeaten four-year-old Brooch, but there are several others with profiles to suggest they could get involved in the finish.

Trainer Ralph Beckett says of Secret Gesture: "I am happy with her and she has a decent draw. The three-year-olds are competitive and Brooch is progressive, but this looks a suitable opportunity for Secret Gesture."

Among other Curragh entries is Roheryn, who runs for Ger Lyons' yard in the three-runner, Gr.3 Hermitage Medical Clinic International Stakes.

In Britain today, a recent Qatar Racing purchase, Katie's Diamond, steps into Stakes company following a debut win in maiden company. Carrying the colours of Qatar Racing and Barbara Keller, two-year-old Katie's Diamond tackles the Listed Betfred Supporting the Animal Trust Empress Stakes (14.50) at Newmarket.

Trainer Karl Burke says: "Katie's Diamond has progressed well from her maiden win and worked well in her prep for the Empress Stakes. I think she is the one they have to beat."
