Summer highlights in sight of the sea

Thirty-five races over five days begin on Tuesday on the Sussex Downs, the home of Glorious Goodwood, while on the west coast of Ireland, Galway's six-day bonanza - a mix of Flat and jumps racing - begins tomorrow (Monday).

Arod's participation in Glorious Goodwood's Gr.1 Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday will be a focal point, after trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam revealed that would be the four-year-old's target, rather than Tuesday's Gr.2 Qatar Lennox Stakes - the stumbling block would be further heavy rain, for Arod (who is pictured under Andrea Atzeni) clearly revels on fast ground.

He was impressive when winning the Gr.2 Summer Mile at Ascot, and, before that, Epsom's Gr.3 Diomed Stakes, yet his rivals in the big race this week are likely to include the Royal Ascot Group One winners Gleneagles and Solow. Add in Toormore, who finished one place ahead of Arod in May's Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, plus two more smart three-year-olds in Dutch Connection and Bossy Guest, and you have an outstanding mile showdown.

Chapple-Hyam told the Racing Post last week: "They will be hard to knock down, but sometimes you've got to take horses like this on. Sometimes you've got to be bold."

The Charlie Hills-trained Kiyoshi is another Qatar Racing candidate for the Qatar Lennox Stakes, but she also holds an entry in Friday's Gr.3 L'Ormarins Queens Plate Stakes (Oak Tree Stakes) - in which Terrorand Queen Catrine are also entered - while the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Pallasator holds a brace of options - Tuesday's Summer Handicap and Thursday's Qatar Goodwood Cup.

Simple Verse and Lady Dragon hold entries in another of Thursday's Pattern races, the Gr.3 Lillie Langtry Stakes.

Galway possible runners this week include Lat Hawill, who returned to winning form at Gowran last month for Ger Lyons' stable - he and stablemate Chopin are engaged in Tuesday's Topaz Mile Handicap
