The sight of Golden Horn bidding to extend his unbeaten record is worth the admission fee alone, yet it seems likely he will have to be on his A-game to defeat some very talented older horses. It was just such a clash, between three-year-old Grundy and senior rivals, that resulted in the 1975 running of the race being widely dubbed the race of the 20th Century, and it would be hard to think of a better contest in Europe, let alone Britain.

As this year's race approaches the sponsors have inaugurated the QIPCO King George Diamonds and Pearls, to honour some of the great runnings of the race, and it is Grundy's narrow defeat of Bustino 40 years ago which becomes the first to be celebrated.

It was announced in June that QIPCO had extended their partnership with Ascot for a further ten years, until 2024. The terms of the partnership include sponsorship of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, a director of QIPCO, says: "No other country can match the quality and heritage of racing in Britain, it is the reason why we support British racing through our sponsorship and our partnership with Ascot.

"The King George is among the greatest races in the world and it is important that its heritage is celebrated as we believe to do so serves to uphold its contemporary status as well."
