Another Gr.1 for Qatar Racing as Buckaroo wins Underwood
Buckaroo, who Qatar Racing own in partnership, followed up his win in the Gr.2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick earlier this month when impressively taking the G.1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
Buckaroo was born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills – bred by The Roheryn Partnership – and raced solely for Qatar Racing until a year ago. He’d begun his career in Ireland for Joseph O’Brien, who had saddled him to win a maiden and two Listed races, as well as finishing 4th in 2 Gr.1s.
Buckaroo switched to the care of Chris Waller at the start of the year and, after testing the water in Gr.1s in the spring, has proven better than ever of late. He had been gelded over the summer.
Carrying the colours of Ozzie Kheir, Buckaroo stormed down the outer to beat 11 rivals in the 1800m Underwood by 3½ lengths and much more. He was ridden by the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira.
Chris Waller’s assistant Charlie Duckworth told the press: “As a colt, he was actually too laid-back but now, as a gelding, he’s actually got a bit of spring in his step and he’s a bit more vibrant.”
Moreira added: “It feels amazing, you know. That’s what horseracing is about. When you get one up, the feeling doesn’t get any better.
“Impressive the way he won, isn’t it? [Buckaroo] found himself a little bit too far back. But as the race disenrolled itself, it kind of got him into the race. When I turned for home on the outside, with him having great momentum, I was always confident he was going to get up.
“Nice horse makes a jockey’s life so much easier, doesn’t it?”
Buckaroo has plenty more Gr.1 options open to him, including the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup – he even holds an entry for the Melbourne Cup.
Buckaroo was bred at Tweenhills in Gloucester, home of Qatar Racing’s stallions, mares and youngstock. He’s out of the very successful Galileo mare Roheryn, a Listed winner who also produced another winner on Saturday in Kihavah, who scored at Ayr.
Roheryn in also the dam of Middle Earth, who is set to join Buckaroo in Australia and also entered in the Melbourne Cup, and filly Siege of Troy who is trained in Ireland but was an eye-catching 3rd in a US Listed race recently.
