Another Group win courtesy of Zousain
Qatar Racing had its second Group win in five days when Zousain won the Gr. 2 Champagne Classic in Australia on Saturday.
After Lightening Quick won a Gr. 3 on Monday, two-year-old Australian colt Zousain went a step better by landing the Gr. 2 Champagne Classic over 1200m at Doomben. It was a tenth Stakes success of 2018 for horses in which Qatar Racing hold an interest.
Zousain was aimed at the Queensland Carnival after finishing fourth and six in Group races following his winning debut, and the benefits of a short break were on display as he showed a smart change of gear to win the Champagne Classic by two and a half lengths from Mishani Hustler.
Kerrin McEvoy rode the Chris Waller-trained Zousain to win first time out and noted he'd come on considerably since then.
‚"The exciting thing is that he's got more to give,‚" the jockey said.
Zousain is a son of Zoustar (part-owned by Qatar Racing and also trained by Waller) who did not contest the Champagne, but won the Gr. 1 BRC Sires, the race Zousain is likely to contest next.
Zousain was a $400,000 Magic Millions purchase for David Redvers and Guy Mulcaster, and he appears to be very much in the mould of his sire.
Zousain is Zoustar's second Stakes winner after the high-class juvenile filly Sunlight.
