Brutus ensures Archie Pottinger takes Qatar Racing Eight to Follow competition

The Richard Hannon-trained colt finished runner-up, beaten just half a length, which resulted in ten points for stables which included him in their lists.

Pottinger had the vision to include Brutus in both his leading list and one that lay in joint-second, so he now lies first and clear second. No other stable can leap ahead, for while several near the top include Fruity and Crikey - who are declared to run at Newmarket and Wolverhampton respectively on Friday - Pottinger has that pair in his lists, too.

If Crikey wins, but Fruity is unplaced, Pottinger's first list would go further ahead, while Tristan Wootton, who lies joint-second at present, would take the runner-up spot and a cheque for £5,000. Other permutations could yet see a change in the places, but Pottinger is across the line in first.

The rules state that there is one prize - the biggest - per person, so should Pottinger's stables be first and second the smaller prize will go down to the entrant below. Should two stables share the same points it will be the one whose horses have won most races that takes the prize.

All proceeds from the Qatar Racing Eight to Follow competition will be generously donated by Sheikh Fahad to the charity Racing Welfare.
