Frankie and Frankel colt set for Curragh after Seas goes in again
Impressive debut winner South Seas followed up by scoring again when running in a novices' race at Haydock this afternoon.
The Andrew Balding-trained two-year-old colt won by two and three-quarters of a length under Oisin Murphy, confirming the promise of his first run and the high opinion in which he is held by his trainer. South Seas does not hold any Group-race entries, but it will be fascinating to see how he progresses when he steps up in trip.
At the Curragh tomorrow Qatar Racing runs two exciting newcomers in the opening maiden race (14.55). Lightening Fast bids to become the first son of Frankel to score in Ireland the sire has enjoyed a rapid start in his new career as a stallion while Beast is a promising newcomer by Qatar Bloodstock stallion Makfi.
Lightening Fast was foaled by the mare Lightening Pearl, who became Pearl Bloodstock's first Group One winner when landing the Cheveley Park Stakes in 2011. Like his dam, Lightening Fast is trained by Ger Lyons, who has booked Colin Keane for the ride.
Beast, who is trained by Michael O'Callaghan and will be ridden by Pat Smullen, is a son of the very smart Wunders Dream, who won the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes.
Both colts will need to be very switched on to beat the likely favourite Taj Mahal, who is a Galileo brother to Classic winners Gleneagles and Marvellous. He was beaten on his debut, but has that experience on his side now.
Ready To Roc, trained by Johnny Murtagh, tackles the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes (16.40) on the same Curragh card. Frankie Dettori (below) takes the ride on the colt, who won at Dundalk on debut, but has been beaten twice since on ground that was too soft a quicker surface tomorrow would help.
