La Rioja's third place in a Listed race at Pontefract yesterday means David Jewers has become the first competitor to reach 200pts in this year's Qatar Racing 8 to Follow competition.

The Henry Candy-trained filly was gaining her second place in a Stakes race this year, and earned another 10pts for competitors who included her in their 8 to Follow 'stables'.

Jewers place at the top is safe for the time being, although Gloucestershire-based Dave Turpin would move up into a share of third place if Sun Angel who is also trained by Candy wins her maiden at Windsor (17.30) this afternoon.

Qatar Racing's 8 to Follow competition opened at the QIPCO Guineas Festival in late April and runs until QIPCO British Champions' Day at Ascot on Saturday, October 15. It is a fun way to follow Qatar Racing horses through the season, but with the chance to pick up some fabulous cash prizes the person whose stable of eight horses gains the most points takes £10,000 and there is money down to fifth place. Extra points are gained in black-type races, and every stable had to include at least four two-year-olds.

The £10 entry fee is given to the charity Racing Welfare, which assists people in need who work in the racing and bloodstock industries.
