Qatar Racing hoping for a very Good Friday
Qatar Racing has three runners on Lingfield's valuable Good Friday card, as well as another in a Listed race at Newcastle the same day.
First up is Mountain Bell who bids to maintain her unbeaten record over two miles in the Betway All-Weather Marathon Championships Conditions Stakes (2.00pm). The Ralph Beckett-trained five-year-old relished the step up in trip when winning at Newcastle last time, when she had the re-opposing Watersmeet and Lord George (both won next time) over two lengths behind. Mountain Bell meets them on the same weight terms and has every chance of going close again.
Another likeable female bidding to win two races on the bounce is Soul Silver who goes in the Betway All-Weather Fillies' And Mares' Championships Conditions Stakes (2.30pm). She got back to winning ways in a small field at Chelmsford last time. That race was over a mile, whereas she drops back to seven furlongs here, and this race will be tougher, especially from a wide draw, but she's as game as they come and the David Simcock yard continues among the winners.
Arguably the best chance on the card for Qatar Racing comes in the 4.40pm, the Betway Easter Classic All-Weather Middle Distance Championships Conditions Stakes over a mile and a quarter. Soul Silver's stablemate Mr Owen (pictured) finished first past the post by a head in the Gr. 3 Winter Derby over this CandD last time before being placed second after hanging (because of the shadow of the big screen on the track) into initial runner-up Master The World. That run proved our horse is capable of beating David Elsworth's grey - who is currently just edging favouritism - and we're very hopeful of another big run.
Also on Friday, last year's dual-winning two-year-old Fortune's Pearl tries to better his return in the second renewal of the Burradon Stakes (3.55pm) at Newcastle, which has been upgraded to Listed status this year. Among his rivals is Gronkowski, who won the Kempton race in which Fortune's Pearl was third on his reappearance, so our lad will need to up his game.
