Spear so close in Gr. 1 Lockinge Stakes
The popular Lightning Spear went agonisingly close to winning his first Gr. 1 in the Lockinge at Newbury on Saturday.
After finishing second to Ribchester in the Gr. 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes a year ago, Lightning Spear repeated the feat on Saturday - though it could have been so different but for better luck.
Lightning Spear tanked through the 14-runner race, bouncing off the good to firm ground, and only had favourite Rhododendron to beat in the closing stages. The pair hit the line in unison and it needed the judge to separate them, with Rhododendron winning by a short head. The photo suggested that Lightning Spear was in front a stride after the line.
The huge performance from Lighting Spear - right back to his best on ratings - continued the fantastic run of form for the David Simcock yard, though the trainer was naturally disappointed too.
He said: ‚"That's taken the wind out of me slightly. I'm very proud of the horse and Ois√≠n [Murphy] has given him a fantastic ride because he counted to five before he went; he went the same time as the filly and fair play to her.‚"
Lightning Spear has now finished in the first four in Gr. 1 races at four, five, six and seven, including on his first start of the last three seasons, under Oisin on each occasion - he's been an absolute star for Qatar Racing and the David Simcock team, including the trainer's wife Jennie who rides him at home.
Lightning Spear's next assignment is likely to be the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
