Watch Gold yearlings at Goffs UK
At Deauville yesterday the featured Gr.1 Prix Morny was won by star US filly Lady Aurelia, ridden by Frankie Dettori.
Lady Aurelia was harried for much of the race by Tis Marvellous, a son of Qatar Bloodstock stallion Harbour Watch and on paper her biggest danger, but he dropped away inside the final furlong. Trainer Clive Cox expressed surprised disappointment that Tis Marvellous did not sustain his challenge to the line, and said he would monitor the colt once back at his yard.
One of Europe's most important yearling sales begins tomorrow at Doncaster when Goffs UK stages its two-day Premier Sale, followed on Thursday by the Silver Sale.
Harbour Watch, a brilliant, unbeaten two-year-old, will be represented by nine colts or fillies in the Premier Sale, plus two fillies and a colt at the Silver Sale. His fellow Qatar Bloodstock stallion, Havana Gold, who also stands at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire, is represented by his first crop of yearlings at a British sale eight youngsters by the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat winner head to the Premier Sale and four are in the Silver Sale. Also on offer at the Premier Sale is a filly by Makfi, another member of the Qatar Bloodstock roster, but who stands at Haras de Bonneval in France. See www.goffsuk.com for catalogue details.
Qatar Racing's sole runner today is Gwendolyn in a handicap (19.05) at Thirsk Speed Freak, who was also due to run at the meeting, has been withdrawn.
Gwendolyn, who is owned in partnership by Qatar Racing, Sheikhs Khalifa and Suhaim, joined Robert Cowell's stable in November last year and soon won a maiden followed by a handicap this spring off a mark of 75.
She has not won since, but three placings have seen her mark rise to one of 85, and she carries top weight this evening, although apprentice George Wood lessens her load by claiming 7lb.
