Caulfield Stakes place by Side Glance carries Jackie up the table

Under another canny ride by Jamie Spencer, the Andrew Balding-trained gelding finished third of 12 runners, beaten a total of two lengths by locally-trained runner Fawkner and New Zealand's Criterion. Post-race, owner Sheikh Fahad said the Cox Plate or Mackinnon Stakes (which Side Glance won last year) would be next on the horse's Australian agenda.

Had Side Glance finished second there would be a new leader in the Qatar Racing Eight To Followcompetition, which concludes on Saturday, QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot.

Jackie Hutchinson was the sole entrant among the top 20 who included the horse in her stable at the start of the season, and while she must rue missing out on the top spot, his third place gained her ten points and lifted her from joint-fifth to joint-second in the table.

Archie Pottinger retains a narrow lead and could pick up extra points this week - Mind Of Madness, Brutus and Crikey are members of his 'stable' with entries in races.

Pottinger also has a stable lying joint-second, and it includes Fruity, who holds an entry at Newmarket on Friday, while Tristan Wootton, who shares the same position, has Crikey and Mind Of Madness as potential runners.

Proceeds from Eight To Follow benefits the charity Racing Welfare.
