QATAR RACING PONY RACING CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE RUN ON QATAR RACING BRITISH CHAMPIONS DAY FOR FIRST TIME

Young riders from across Britain will have the opportunity to compete on one of racing's biggest stages this autumn when, for the first time, the Qatar Racing Pony Racing Championship takes place on Qatar Racing British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 17^th October.

The race, for ponies 148cm and under, forms part of the Dragon TV & Film Racecourse Series 2026, delivered by the Pony Racing Authority (PRA).

The introduction of the championship race as the opening contest on Britain's richest raceday provides an exciting showcase for the next generation of racing talent, with many of today's leading jockeys having started their careers in pony racing.

David Redvers, Bloodstock & Racing Manager, Qatar Racing, said:

“Sheikh Fahad and all at Qatar Racing are absolutely delighted that we will be hosting the Pony Racing Championship at Ascot on Qatar Racing British Champions Day for the first time this year. We are grateful for all the work that has gone on behind the scenes to make this happen and are confident that this will further enrich the day whilst showcasing the next generation of talented riders and giving them and their families a day they will never forget."

The importance of pony racing in developing future professional riders is highlighted by many of the sport's current stars, including Billy Loughnane and Hollie Doyle.

Loughnane, the 2022 All-Weather Pony Racing Series champion, said:

"Pony racing was massive for me and gave me such a good grounding. You learn so much from it, from riding different ponies to learning about races and getting that competitive experience from a young age.

"To get the chance to ride in a pony race on Qatar Racing British Champions Day at Ascot is going to be class for the young riders involved. It's a massive stage and something they'll remember for a long time. Pony racing has produced so many jockeys who are riding professionally now, so hopefully we might be watching a few of the next generation out there!"

Doyle, a four-time winner on Qatar Racing British Champions Day and a former Pony Club member, added:

"Opportunities like this are incredibly important for young riders. Pony racing teaches you many of the fundamentals for a career in racing, but just as importantly it inspires a lifelong passion for the sport. Competing at Ascot on Qatar Racing British Champions Day is something these young riders will never forget, and it is fantastic to see that pathway being recognised on such a major occasion."
