Shisospicy another Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner for Qatar Racing
Three years after Caravel carried the Qatar Racing colours to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, the Qatar Racing part-owed Shisospicy won by same race by a clear margin. She is catalogued to sell as Lot 147 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on November 3, along with her dam Mischief Galore.
Qatar Racing bought into 3yo filly Shisospicy before she ran in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup in June. She then returned to the US to win the Gr.2 Music City Stakes over 6.5f on turf at Kentucky Downs in September for trainer Jose d’Angelo and Irad Ortiz Jr.
The same jockey was on board as Shisospicy blitzed her 11 rivals in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint over 5f at Del Mar on Saturday. Trailing in her wake were Gr.1 winners AG Bullet and Khaadem and Gr.2 Reef Runner.
Jose d’Angelo told press after the race: “I was very confident in her since day one, she was special since day one. We wanted to use her speed, which comes naturally to her.”
Irad Ortiz Jr added: “The plan was to let her be where she wanted to be. She broke so good, and after that, it made everything easier. I had a lot of horse turning for home and never felt anyone was close to me. I kept waiting and no one was able to get close. That was the key."
The Qatar Racing team were in attendance to celebrate her victory – what a fantastic day.
Shisospicy is part-owned with Morplay Racing. She was bred in Kentucky by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt. She’s the first Gr.1 winner for Mitole, who won the 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprint, out of the winning Into Mischief mare Mischief Galore.
