Sumbal Second - Sofia Rosa ko'd from NZ Oaks
The Francis Graffard-trained four-year-old split two race-fit rivals as he finished half a length behind winner Garlingari, with Affaire Solitaire a length further back, third of the seven runners. It was Sumbal's first race since finishing unplaced on QIPCO British Champions Day, and while he ranged upsides pace-setting Garlingari in the final furlong the winner, who had already run three times since the turn of the year, pulled out just enough to prevail.
In the Listed Prix Camargo, which drew nine runners on the same card, three-year-old filly Qatar Power also took second. She finished behind La Cressonniere, who is now unbeaten in three races.
Ireland's turf season opened yesterday with a meeting at the Curragh, where Queen Catrine finished unplaced in the Gr.3 Park Express Stakes.
Makfi's daughter Rosa misses out on NZ Oaks
Sofia Rosa, a daughter of Qatar Bloodstock stallion Makfi, has become New Zealand's 'Filly of the Year', despite losing Saturday's Oaks in the stewards' room.
The Stephen Marsh-trained filly was first past the post, 'winning' by a nose under jockey Danielle Johnson, but was alleged to have impeded runner-up Fanatic three strides from the line. At the inquiry Marsh pointed out his filly had not been headed and that Fanatic's jockey, Mark Hills, had not stopped riding, but the result was overturned.
